Multimedia Digital Library technologies focus on the acquisition, creation –authoring-, processing, analysis, storage, search and distribution of large repositories of digital multimedia information, especially multimedia content of relevance to sectors such as Cultural Heritage and the Audiovisual industry. The multimedia context comprises not only digital texts (such as digital books) but also images, videos, sounds, and even 3D content and interactive experiences.

Vicomtech-IK4 research in Multimedia Digital Libraries is centered in the following aspects: Trust and Security (including Provenance and Rights Management) and Experience Creation (including authoring tools, multichannel visualization and interaction and search/browsing).

  • Digital Provenance allows tracking the origin of specific multimedia content, including the integrity, chronology, custody and location of a specific multimedia asset.
  • Digital Rights Management technologies ensure the rights of a multimedia content’s owner are upheld by providing mechanisms for managing its authorized use for consumption, copying, printing and adaptation.
  • Authoring Tools are customized computer-based authoring environments to be used by experts in the generation of multimedia content and applications (and not necessarily computer experts). A good authoring tool focuses on content creation requirements and avoids computer-related complexity.
  • Multichannel Visualization with digital content is a key aspect of Digital Libraries, since they are the main ways to experience digital content in an interactive and visual manner.
  • Search/Browsing in Digital Libraries allows the user to look for specific multimedia content. Multimedia search and browsing technologies deal not only with text but also with image, video, sound and 3D characteristics.
