Abstract

Firm innovation and digitalization are top priorities in the managerial, scholarly and policymaking agendas. The so-called open innovation paradigm and Industry 4.0 revolution are the lens through which the challenges of being innovative and digital are being developed and applied. Although many studies address open innovation and Industry 4.0 as separate issues, fewer have paid attention to their relationship. This chapter reviews these studies according to a classifying framework and provides some preliminary evidence on the linkage between openness and Industry 4.0. Some studies view open innovation and Industry 4.0 digitalization as indistinguishable or overlapping phenomena occurring simultaneously. In contrast, others see Industry 4.0 as an enabling mechanism for openness, while still others see openness driving Industry 4.0. Preliminary evidence based on a large sample of 733 manufacturing firms competing in Spain shows strong correlations between open innovation and Industry 4.0 adoption and between them and innovation outcomes. This chapter discusses issues of temporal causality to shed light on these relations and identifies opportunities for further research on this crucial linkage.
