Vicomtech participates in the 5G Loginnov project, based on innovation in logistics and ports through 5G technologies.

Ports are essential for the growth of Europe and its economy. 74% of imported or exported goods are transported through them. Thus, the emergence of 5G technology has created unlimited potential to improve efficiency, fight pollution and innovate in all sectors.

Vicomtech participates in 5G LOGINNOV, an European project that seeks to provide a solution to the challenge of ensuring an efficient, sustainable and desaturated management of cities and port areas. It is an innovative project that seeks to revolutionise freight transport and traffic operations in ports and logistics centres by harnessing cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, the Internet of Things (IoT), data analysis and next-generation traffic management.

Thus, the objectives of this project include, on the one hand, minimising the environmental impact around the ports, reducing congestion in the port area and the impact on the city, representing a pillar of business innovation and economic development for the region and facilitating the integration of autonomous trucks of the future.

The vision of the 5G-LOGINNOV project is to design an innovation reference framework in terms of integration and validation of Automated and Connected Driving/Mobility technologies related to Industry 4.0 and in the port domain, creating new opportunities for the LOGistic value chain to be INNOVATIVE.  Furthermore, the innovations have been implemented and tested in real operational conditions in three Living Lab environments, associated with the three 5G-LOGINNOV ports, the Living Labs of Athens (Greece), Hamburg (Germany) and Luka Koper (Slovenia).

Led by ERTICO, 5G-LOGINNOV involves a total of 15 partners from 8 European countries, with Vicomtech providing the artificial vision algorithms for the detection and classification of possible damage caused to containers received at the port. Vicomtech has also participated in the development of systems that, supported by information transmitted via 5G technology, solve visual inspection and surveillance problems using Artificial Intelligence techniques (Deep Fakes).

Undoubtedly, great advances in 5G technology and Artificial Intelligence will optimise the Logistics and Transport processes in a near future. In this new context, 5G Loginnov ensures therefore that port areas and cities will soon be able to manage capacity and cope with traffic congestion and environmental challenges.
