WellK4FIT project concludes: an intelligent system driving personalized physical activity plans
The solution, which has just entered its pilot phase, aims to create an intelligent system capable of designing personalized physical activity plans to improve the quality of life of older adults.

The musculoskeletal system is essential for quality of life, providing support, stability, and movement, and enabling independence. However, the loss of muscle mass is a common process associated with aging, which can lead to decreased strength and increased frailty and dependency.
The WellK4FIT project, a collaborative effort between the Basque SME WellK and the research center Vicomtech, completed its development phase on September 30. The solution is now entering its implementation phase, as WellK launches an intelligent system designed to create personalized physical activity plans. Both entities contribute their expertise and knowledge to improve the quality of life of the senior population.
WellK4FIT was born with the aim of promoting interventions based on physical activity, as regular exercise helps slow down this progression and proves effective in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and osteoporosis. The main goal is to develop an intelligent system capable of designing personalized plans.
WellK4FIT is an AI-based software module that understands each person’s individual characteristics, goals, and health conditions to provide a personalized exercise prescription. The prescription includes aerobic and anaerobic exercises, number of repetitions, intensity, and temporal progression, ensuring the experience is enjoyable, engaging, and aligned with each person’s objectives.
The solution relies on a knowledge model built from the expertise and recommendations of professionals and specialists in physical activity and sports. Using user data, the system generates training plans tailored to individual characteristics. These plans take into account various factors such as sports history, health conditions, goals, and personal objectives. The generated plans balance strength and cardio work, regulate frequency and intensity, and ensure adequate progression over time.
The technical solution has been validated throughout the entire data management process and in the generation of the digital service. Currently, WellK is carrying out a pilot experience involving specialized professionals and end users. This approach promotes the adoption of sustainable and effective physical activity habits, maximizing health benefits and improving adherence to training programs.
Vicomtech, as an applied research center specialized in digital technologies, is responsible for the technological consultancy service and the development of the intelligent solution.
Tasks carried out by Vicomtech include:
- Analysis and Review: The center analyzes WellK’s working methodologies and conducts an exhaustive review of the state of the art and the market, identifying technologies applied to the personalization of physical activity, including rule-based systems, ontologies, machine learning techniques, and language models.
- Technical Design: Defines the functional flow of the solution, designs the data model, and selects the most appropriate technologies for implementation.
- Technological Implementation: The system is based on a knowledge model implemented through active ontologies that formalize expert knowledge using a set of rules. These technologies enable the generation of consistent and adaptive recommendations. The project makes use of Machine Learning and Data Intelligence technologies.
The project has received funding from the EU’s Next Generation funds, the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism, and the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan through the Digital Innovation Hubs Support Program (PADIH).
Through WellK4FIT, Vicomtech reaffirms its commitment to promoting healthy living and active aging for all through its digital technologies.
