Sustainable mobility is one of the biggest challenges facing the city of Donostia / San Sebastián today. In the European Union, the transport sector accounts for 23% of energy-related CO2 emissions, but in the case of the Basque Autonomous Community, this percentage rises to 43%. Road transport accounts for 96.1% of this figure. Given this situation, meeting the targets set out in the Paris Agreement will require a 50% reduction in transport-related emissions by 2050. In this context, the San Sebastián Mobility Department aims to move towards a more sustainable mobility model, which involves achieving key points, such as reducing traffic congestion and implementing new technologies that help to manage mobility based on advanced and intelligent data analysis.

Objectives:

The main objective of the project is industrial research into new technologies. On the one hand, technologies for the capture, pre-processing and fusion of mobility data, and on the other hand, technologies for the creation of new mobility models.

The project focuses on the New Mobility Mission, specifically on data-based mobility management and traffic decongestion.  Research is being conducted into technologies that address the following processes:

- Data capture:  analysis of existing sources and data and research into new processing technologies for data extraction. This also includes new techniques for merging and integrating various data sources, as well as pre-processing them for subsequent use.

- Research and implementation of new mobility models based on the data obtained in the previous point. In this regard, it is necessary to obtain the most complete and accurate replica of the city's mobility model, which will provide a comprehensive and complete view of mobility, as well as a specific view of certain more problematic areas.

Thanks to the application of AI-based technologies to this data, it will be possible to research and implement event inference and prediction techniques, which will support decision-making in the field of mobility management.

Vicomtech's role:

The participants in the project are the City Council of Donostia/San Sebastián and Vicomtech. Vicomtech's mission is to research and develop technologies that have a positive impact on our environment through technology transfer. Part of this mission involves offering technological advice to entities such as public administrations. In this area, Vicomtech has been paying special attention to the city of Donostia / San Sebastián for some time, working with the Department of Mobility to identify possible needs and areas for improvement in its activities. Along the way, some basic research projects have been carried out, the results of which have provided Vicomtech with knowledge that is applicable to the issues addressed in this project.

On the other hand, the city of Donostia / San Sebastián, with its current circumstances regarding the deployment of LEZs and a highly changeable traffic situation, especially in the summer months, which poses a significant challenge for mobility managers, is a very appropriate setting for researching new technologies that can address these challenges, as well as for deploying and validating them, through the case that will be defined in the DonostiaMOB project.
