Hybrid applications of augmented reality and edge computing technologies in industrial environments
EDGE AR
Duration:
01.05.2018 - 30.09.2019
Project Objectives
The objective of the EDGE-AR project is to investigate how EDGE architectures can be combined with Augmented Reality to support scenarios such as remote assistance in industrial environments.
The functional and technological requirements necessary to generate complete user experiences that can be implemented in production environments will be evaluated. The use of low-cost dedicated hardware as a user terminal will necessarily require balancing the workload between the terminal itself and the edge platform.
Additionally, the industrial remote assistance use case implies that communication latencies between the user, platform, and assistance operator will be much higher on local networks. Therefore, the functional requirements that the entire system must meet to provide the best possible user experience will be evaluated.
The EDGE-AR project represents a significant opportunity for Vicomtech to enhance its expertise in Industry 4.0 tools and applications, generating knowledge that will enable the development of effective tools to minimize latency and reduce bandwidth consumption for machine tool applications.
The project's objectives will boost the Advanced Industry and Manufacturing department, which specializes in the technologies of the Industry 4.0 paradigm, thus consolidating the research and development lines defined in Vicomtech's strategic plans. Since generating new knowledge is one of Vicomtech's core missions, the transfer of this knowledge to ITC in particular and the Basque business community in general will also be part of the impact the EDGE-AR project will have on Vicomtech.
