Linked Data for Sustainable Tourism Destinations

Abstract

Management and certification of Sustainable Tourism Destinations (STDs) is based on a variety of Sustainable Tourism Indicators (STIs) measuring the environmental, social and economic impact of tourism. Nowadays there are several organizations proposing different STIs and certifications for STDs. The heterogeneity of these indicators and the available tourism data makes gathering, updating and comparing data about STIs a resource intensive task. Linked Open Data (LOD), which combines the Open Data movement and the Linked Data initiative, consists of published data enhanced with semantic annotations and links to external data. Although LOD could ease the previous tasks, the lack of clear methodologies, publication examples and tools focused on tourism stakeholders has been reflected on a scarcity of available examples of LOD about both tourism and sustainability. This paper presents a methodology for the publication of LOD for tourism stakeholders, which has been implemented using Open Source tools. An envisioned scenario focused on the publication of LOD about STIs is described, presenting its advantages. This scenario, which requires the participation of tourism stakeholders and faces challenges shared by the LOD community, could greatly impact and improve the management and certification of STDs.
