Advanced neural modeling for high-quality translation

Modena

Duration:

01.04.2018 - 31.12.2019

Through MODENA, a research project is being proposed to address the challenges described above and contribute to consolidating the Basque Country's position as a benchmark in language technologies. The project's main objective is:

Research, development, and validation of high-quality machine translation systems using architectures and processes based on deep learning and artificial neural networks.

The project's main objective is broken down into the following scientific and technological goals:

1. Research and development of neural translation architectures and algorithms to significantly improve translation quality and preserve information.

2. Research and development of data modeling and exploitation methods to improve the quality of machine translations.

3. Creation of advanced, high-quality neural machine translation systems, both generic and adapted to specific domains.

4. Creation and preparation of datasets for generic Basque-Spanish and Spanish-English translation in the healthcare domain.

5. Automatic and human evaluation of the developed systems.

The following scope and impact objectives have also been defined:

1. Definition of a pilot case of a generic system for the Basque-Spanish pair and adapted to the healthcare domain for the Spanish-English pair.

2. Validation of the prototypes in relation to the state of the art regarding adaptability and accuracy of advanced neural machine translation systems.

3. Academic dissemination of the project results at international conferences.

4. Transfer of results to industry and analysis of the possibilities for commercial exploitation.

To achieve these objectives, MODENA has a strong consortium with extensive experience in the field of language technologies, which aspires to become a benchmark in the field. This is a strategic project for all participating entities and for Eiken, MondragonLingua, Eleka, Argia, and EITB, which have expressed their support for the project through letters of support.
