ICTs and power electronics, key technologies for a revolution in land transport II

Duration:

01.06.2016 - 31.12.2017

One of the ambitious goals of this project is the development of a deterministic wireless communication system for industrial control applications. Several MAC solutions exist, some offering the possibility of using sporadic (emergency) traffic, while others enabling the use of properly scheduled periodic traffic. WiFi communication systems have also been proposed as a viable alternative for industrial applications; however, the standard does not support deterministic behavior, necessitating modifications to the MAC layer to meet timing requirements. Considering this, the project proposes designing a comprehensive communication system on an FPGA-based platform, integrating the development of a WiFi physical layer with the MAC layer. This will address the need for real-time broadband hard communication systems.

Achieving the project's objectives will have a significant impact at various levels, as it forms the foundation for the development of active safety systems in vehicular environments where all elements of the scene, both mobile and static, must be geolocated. These systems will be
beneficial for Tier 2, Tier 1, and OEM companies alike, given that driving automation trends will require precise calculation of vehicle position and movement characteristics.
