VeRa is software designed to help radiotherapy specialists customise and verify patient treatment planning to make it more accurate, safe and effective.
Vicomtech is collaborating with KERMA System Research to develop innovative solutions aimed at improving planning and quality assurance (QA) in intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) treatments. This work is part of the Digital Innovation Hubs Support Programme (PADIH), supported by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism and the EOI Foundation, and part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility – Next Generation EU.
Intensity-modulated radiotherapy is an advanced technique widely used in oncology, which allows precise doses of radiation to be administered to tumours while minimising damage to healthy tissue. However, current treatment planning and verification processes have limitations due to the technical complexity and uncertainties inherent in each patient and treatment plan.
In this context, KERMA has developed VeRa, a software tool that introduces computational simulation and advanced digital technologies. Its objective is to improve the availability and quality of the information used in radiotherapy planning processes, the quality assurance of these plans and their delivery, thus contributing to the generation of safer, more effective and personalised plans.
Today, VeRa offers modules aimed at the clinical interpretation of DVH curves, the estimation of radiobiological parameters, the comparison and optimisation of treatments, and the virtualisation of plan quality assurance (QA) processes.
Vicomtech has provided technical advice to validate and optimise these components, with a detailed analysis of their usefulness in real clinical settings. In addition, work has been done on predictive tools with AI and the implementation of high-precision radiophysical computer simulations, the results of which seek to validate and extend the QA virtualisation methodologies available in VeRa.
With this project, Vicomtech reinforces its commitment to innovation in the healthcare sector, contributing knowledge in advanced digital technologies to help make cancer care more accurate, safer and more patient-centred.
