New manufacturing and automation technologies for controlled, flexible, efficient, and sustainable processes applied to the machining of high-performance materials.

Companies driving the aerospace sector, as well as Tier 2 suppliers dedicated to the manufacturing of complex components, face major challenges in the forming of their parts. The main difficulty is related to the type of materials used, especially in components located in the hot sections of the engine. Superalloys based on Ni and titanium are commonly employed, as they exhibit excellent properties at high temperatures. However, the complex machinability of these materials—mainly due to their hardness—ultimately affects the productivity and efficiency of the process.

Thanks to a high degree of automation and the integration of in-house developments, EGILE has a grinding process for NGVs and blades that surpasses the productivity and efficiency levels previously achieved in the sector. This has led to the development of a joint commercialization strategy with ITP Aero and has attracted the interest of other market players such as Safran AE, strengthening the position of the Basque aerospace sector in the aircraft engine segment.

Given the risk that major market players may acquire the current technology, it is essential to maintain a strong position through the continuous development and incorporation of new manufacturing and automation technologies. These advances will enable ongoing improvements in process productivity and competitiveness, supported by the joint participation of different stakeholders in R&D projects, such as the CONFLES project. The ultimate goal of the project is to integrate new manufacturing and automation technologies that allow for a more controlled, flexible, efficient, and sustainable process.
