Smart & Automated Rural Mobility

The LANDAGO project focuses on addressing inclusive mobility, especially for those who live and work in rural areas, which represent almost 30% of the EU population. In many Member States, car dependency in rural areas is high, and public transport options are insufficient to maintain the desired territorial balance, also generating significant costs for public coffers. Driverless vehicles are considered a major opportunity to improve rural mobility for both people and goods.

However, rural roads present unique challenges for advanced automation, such as mixed traffic, high speeds, variable road conditions, and the presence of wildlife and agricultural machinery. Gipuzkoa, with over 70% of its population dispersed across rural and interurban areas, faces these same challenges. Despite substantial annual investment in public transport, the needs of the rural population are not being adequately met. LANDAGO, as an industrial technological research project, arises with the objective of developing advanced technology and promoting its social acceptance, focusing on the specific challenges of automated rural mobility.
