Vicomtech has developed AI-based systems to improve the quality control process of WWTP equipment

Integrated AI platform for efficient management of a WWTP

The Challenge

The main objective of the project is the development of predictive models based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, which favor the optimization of the maintenance and operation of wastewater treatment plants in order to optimize the energy consumption of wastewater treatment plants.

Through new software solutions that facilitate data assimilation and processing, the aim is to be able to analyse and process the large volume and complexity of data already collected by the entities in charge of WWTP management through their advanced information systems.

The Proposed Solution

Vicomtech’s role is focused on providing scientific-technological support, developing models that facilitate the prediction of critical variables and visual tools based on visual analytics that allow the understanding and processing of data. In addition, Vicomtech develops optimal operating criteria based on predictive model simulations, optimization algorithms and user-defined criteria.

The Result

As a result, The SISTELIA project has automated and digitized the process of capturing, processing and managing data. Vicomtech has developed systems based on AI for the improvement of the equipment quality control process. Using Visual Analytics and the application of Data Intelligence methods, it has been possible to analyze and process this data of great volume and complexity. By better understanding the data and facilitating the prediction of critical variables, the design of services has also been improved, processes have been adapted and equipment dimensioned with the aim of achieving energy optimization of plants. Vicomtech has been actively involved in the project by developing decision support systems based on Visual Analytics and Machine Learning techniques, in collaboration with other companies and technology agents of the consortium. In addition, the technological solutions developed have been validated in two full-scale EDARs, EDAR Epele (Arrasate, Gipuzkoa) and EDAR Cartuja (Zaragoza).

The consortium includes Veolia Water Technologies, Mondragon Information Systems, Mapner, Guascor Power (Siemens), MaserMic, Ibermatica, LKS Technological Consultancy, Tekniker-IK4 Technology Center, Mondragon Unibertsitatea, R & D Units, i3B (Ibermatica) and Guascor Power R & D (Siemens). )

Sistelia is an R & D & I project developed within the framework of the Strategic R & D & I program of the Basque Government in the period 2017-2019 as a result of the collaboration proposal of several leading companies in the water sector, technology centres and leading universities in the Basque Country.
