As part of the 12th International Congress on Digital Health, held in Donostia-San Sebastián from September 15 to 17 under the motto “Towards sustainable healthcare”, four organizations presented their innovations at the Health 2.0 Basque panel: San Juan de Dios Gipuzkoa, Ubikare, Cyber Surgery, and Innitius.
The panel was moderated by Blanca Usoz, physician specialized in Occupational Medicine, Health and Workplace Wellbeing; Juan Carlos Santamaría, Communications Director at Ubikare; and Gonzalo López, Business Development Manager for Digital Health & Biomedical Technologies at Vicomtech.
The Basque Country, an innovative ecosystem in digital health
The session was opened by Gonzalo López, BDM for Digital Health & Biomedical Technologies at Vicomtech, who highlighted the innovative and research potential of the Basque Country through key figures: it is the region with the highest percentage of researchers per capita in Spain, it is recognized by Europe as a “strong innovator region,” and benefits from the role of its technological centers —including Vicomtech— along with continuous support from European, national and, very especially, Basque institutions. These factors have been decisive in consolidating the Basque Country as an international benchmark ecosystem in health.
Projects with impact on the healthcare ecosystem
- San Juan de Dios Gipuzkoa presented LAGUN SCHIZOPHRENIA, a project integrating Artificial Intelligence and wearable devices to monitor patients with schizophrenia during temporary stays outside the hospital, enhancing safety, quality of life, and personalized care.
- Ubikare introduced AZALA, an intelligent assistant for the objective assessment and intervention in pressure ulcers (PU). Its AI engine and NAIHA software enable automation of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up processes, reducing variability and optimizing resources.
- Cyber Surgery showcased ALAYA, a comprehensive robotic surgical assistant for spinal surgeries, guiding pedicle screw insertion with high precision through kinematic navigation, enhancing safety, efficiency, and adaptability in the operating room.
- Innitius presented its medical device for pregnancy pathology screening, based on torsional wave elastography and AI, improving preterm birth prediction and facilitating clinical decision-making.
Vicomtech, a technological partner of reference in digital health
The participation of these organizations underscores the importance of technology transfer and collaboration between Vicomtech and its network of partners to bring to market solutions that address the major challenges of the healthcare sector.
“It is rewarding to see how the organizations we collaborate with bring their projects to leading forums, showing that digital health innovation in our environment has a real impact on patients and professionals,” emphasized Gonzalo López, Business Developer for Digital Health & Biomedical Technologies at Vicomtech.
The Congress, organized by the Digital Health Association and the Signo Foundation, once again turned the Miramar Palace into a key meeting point for institutions, companies, and professionals committed to a more sustainable, connected, and people-centered healthcare model.
