Bionanomaterials for biomedical applications in diagnosis and therapy
This project, led by CIC biomaGUNE, is a collaborative research initiative that will investigate, on the one hand, the application of bionanomaterials for the development of more sensitive technologies for the detection of specific biomarkers. Specifically, the integration pathways in detection and diagnostic systems in low cost devices that allow their use in a fast and simple way at the point of care will be investigated.
To achieve this objective, the following aspects will be addressed:
1. Development of hybrid protein-nanocluster nanosensors for the inhibition and diagnosis of fibrosis.
2. Development of non-invasive imaging techniques using bionanomaterials that allow the monitoring of diseases.
3. Development of biosensors based on metallic nanoparticles, specifically on semiconductor nanoparticles and gold nanoparticles.
4. Integration of detection systems in simple devices for use at the point of care (POC).
On the other hand, the bionanomaterials developed will be applied in the search for new therapies for cancer and fibrosis. It is expected that these new approaches will increase the effectiveness of different existing treatments through vehiculation, and involving alternative therapies in other cases.
For this, work will be carried out in the following areas of action:
1. Application of nanosensors not only to diagnosis but to the inhibition of fibrosis markers.
2. Development of bionanomaterials for the efficient and selective vehiculization of anti-cancer drugs.
3. Development of bionanomaterials that can act as contrast agents to monitor the response of tumors to treatment.
4. Development of imaging tools for monitoring the diffusion of bionanomaterials in tumors, as well as follow-up of response to therapy.
5. Development of conductive carbon bionanomaterials for their application in tissue regeneration.
The project counts with the collaboration of the following agents of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network (RVCTI): Tecnalia, Cidetec-IK4, Ceit-IK4, Gaiker-IK4, Vicomtech, Biodonostia, the Biophysics Unit of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the Microfluidics group of the department of Zoology and Cellular Animal Biology of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and is supported by the Basque Government.
