Context:

The musculoskeletal system is essential for quality of life, as it provides support, stability, and movement to the human body. Its proper functioning enables independence, mobility, and the strength needed for daily activities. However, musculoskeletal disorders can seriously impair these abilities, affecting functionality and reducing overall well-being. One of the most significant problems is muscle mass loss, a common aging-related process that can become chronic and lead to decreased strength, physical performance, and increased risk of falls, frailty, and dependency. Fortunately, regular physical exercise has been proven to help slow down this progression and is also effective in managing various chronic conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this regard, promoting physical activity-based interventions is key to preserving functionality and minimizing the impact of aging on quality of life.

Project objective:

With this aim, WellK4FIT was launched—a project focused on developing an intelligent system capable of designing personalized physical activity plans. These plans are generated based on key user information, such as usual activity level, lifestyle (active or sedentary), specific goals (e.g., gaining muscle mass, losing weight, or improving flexibility), and preferences regarding cardiovascular exercise types (running, swimming, walking, among others).

To achieve effective personalization, the system is built on a knowledge model developed from the experience and recommendations of personal trainers involved in the project. Additionally, to offer more comprehensive services, an automated workflow has been implemented to collect information about scheduled exercise sessions on public sports service websites, automatically tagging them based on variables such as intensity, duration, and frequency.

Vicomtech’s role:

Within the project, VICOMTECH plays a key role as the provider of technological consulting services and developer of the solution. Its work focuses on analyzing WellK’s methodologies and materials in order to optimize and structure the final solution. To this end, an exhaustive state-of-the-art and market review is carried out to identify the technologies currently applied in the field of personalized physical activity and health improvement. This review covers a wide range of approaches, including rule-based systems, ontologies, machine learning techniques, and language models, providing a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the available technological options.

Based on the information gathered during the analysis phase, the functional flow of the solution is defined, the data model is designed, and the most suitable technologies for implementation are selected. Once these components are established, development of the intelligent system begins, ensuring alignment with user needs and industry best practices.
