Design of stents for aortic aneurism exclusion treatment

This project focuses on the design, implementation and deployment of computer-assisted software for stent design at health centre, based on computerised tomography (CT) images for EVAR treatment (endovascular aneurysm repair) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).

The process for planning and designing stents for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) can be improved and automated using different digital medical image analysis techniques (segmentation, vascular analysis, etc.), and a software tool will therefore be designed for systematising and standardising the procedure, as an aid for interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons and for quicker stent design and manufacturer communication.

Developing a product for this purpose will have the following advantages:

- Reducing uncertainty levels and speeding up the workflow for stent planning and design, aiding communication between doctors and vendors or distributors.
- Improving the new information and communication technology-based services offered to health professionals.
- Improving service to patients through care-enhancing technologies, making diagnosis and treatment more precise, efficient and, in short, personalised.
- Enhancing companies’ competitive edge by developing products with high technological value and great potential on the international market, as the case for digital medical image applications.

The aim is to cater for a real need expressed by the medical team collaborating on the project. The solution will be applicable to any interventional radiology and vascular surgery department dealing with cases of AAAs treated using EVAR.
