07.05.2026

The technology center Vicomtech and Euskaltzaindia have signed a collaboration agreement under which Vicomtech is recognized as an affiliated entity of the institution. The aim of this partnership is to promote the development of the Basque language in the digital environment and to strengthen cooperation between the two organizations.

The agreement was signed on April 24 by Vicomtech’s General Manager, Julián Flórez, and Euskaltzaindia’s President, Andres Urrutia. Under this framework, both entities commit to working together over the next four years to foster joint initiatives, including participation in international projects.

This recognition as an affiliated entity reflects Vicomtech’s track record in the field of language technologies and its contribution to the technological development of the Basque language in digital environments. With this designation, Vicomtech becomes the third organization to join this network, alongside UZEI and Elhuyar.

Areas of collaboration

The collaboration will be structured around several lines of action aimed at strengthening the presence and use of the Basque language in the digital domain. These include the analysis, identification, and development of the digital resources required to ensure its presence in technological environments, as well as the promotion of products, initiatives, and activities that encourage its appropriate use.

The agreement also includes the dissemination and social outreach of the rules, recommendations, and guidelines established by Euskaltzaindia within the Basque language standardization process, as well as the launch of applied research projects in areas of mutual interest.

In addition, the collaboration will involve the joint organization of meetings, conferences, training activities, and outreach actions related to innovation. It also foresees participation in regional, national, and international forums and networks, as well as the identification of new opportunities for collaboration and funding.

A framework for the development of joint initiatives

The agreement establishes a general framework for cooperation under which specific projects and activities will be jointly defined and developed, based on the shared interests of both organizations.

Through this alliance, Vicomtech brings its extensive expertise in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and language-related interaction, while Euskaltzaindia contributes its leadership in the linguistic field. The shared goal is to foster the development of technological solutions that enhance the presence, use, and evolution of the Basque language in the digital sphere.
